We read the ground one sieve at a time.

Soils, aggregate, rock, concrete and bituminous — tested to British, European and American standards in our own laboratory at Queenslie Industrial Estate.

Sieve stack, in section Five sieves stacked from 20 millimetres down to 0.063 millimetres, with the material retained on each mesh drawn as a band of sand and a thin line of sample falling through the centre. FEED 20 mm 10 mm 6.3 2 0.063 PAN

Illustrative grading curve A grid of percent passing against sieve aperture on a logarithmic scale, with a line plotted through five points — 0.063, 2, 6.3, 10 and 20 millimetres — and the point at 6.3 millimetres called out. 0 20 40 60 80 100 PERCENT PASSING 0.063 2 6.3 10 20 SIEVE APERTURE — mm (LOG SCALE) 66% passing at 6.3 mm

Accredited — and specific about it.

We are UKAS accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and can carry out an extensive range of tests to British, European, and American Standards. Visit our download page to view our UKAS schedules for a full list of accredited testing available.

Scope, in their words

“Our accreditation is limited to those activities described on our UKAS schedule of accreditation.”

The schedule is the list that counts, not the word “accredited” on its own. Every schedule marks which tests sit inside the scope and which do not — read them on the downloads page.

Five materials, one laboratory.

Each group below is tested at Queenslie against the standards named beside it. The tests listed are a sample of the schedules, not the whole of them.

Material types, the tests carried out on each, and the standards they are tested to.
Material Typical tests Standard
Soils Particle size distribution, Atterberg limits, water content, dry density / moisture content, consolidation, triaxial shear strength BS 1377-2:2022BS EN ISO 17892
Aggregate Particle size distribution, flakiness and shape index, particle density and water absorption, Los Angeles abrasion, aggregate impact value BS EN 933-1:2012BS EN 1097
Rock Point load, uniaxial compressive strength, slake durability, density ASTM D7012-23ISRM Suggested Methods
Concrete Compressive strength of cubes and cores, density, slump, air content, flow BS EN 12390BS EN 12350
Bituminous Binder content and sieve analysis, bulk density, maximum density, percentage refusal density BS EN 12697

Standard numbers are taken from the laboratory's own test pages. Accreditation is per test, and is marked as such on the UKAS schedules.

From the van to the portal.

Six stages, one reference number. This is the route a sample takes once it reaches Queenslie Point — and what you see at each one.

  1. 01

    Received

The sample is booked in at Queenslie Point, against your project and your name.

  2. 02

    Logged

It is given a laboratory reference. That reference follows it through every test.

  3. 03

    Prepared

Reduced, dried, split and weighed to suit the method it is going to be run under.

  4. 04

    Tested

Run against the standard named on the schedule — the accredited tests marked as such.

  5. 05

    Reported

Results are issued as a report, quoting the standard each test was run to.

  6. 06

    Portal

Reports are held in the client portal, so the file is where you left it.

The six stages describe a sample's route through the laboratory; they are not a turnaround promise. The portal is MATtest's own SharePoint site.

Our trained technicians can undertake sampling and testing of soils, concrete, asphalt, aggregates and other construction materials for routine compliance, quality control or investigative purposes.
